When I walked into work on my very first day of teaching, another teacher walked up to me and said, “Don’t look so worried, the first year you are going to just ‘tread water,’ but if you survive this year, you will begin to swim.” This statement has stuck with me over the years. I am now in my third year of teaching and I finally feel like I am “swimming.” Now that I can “swim” in my classroom in regards to classroom management, IEPs, curriculum, state-standards, testing, meetings, PLCs, and everything else that is on a teacher’s plate, it is time for me to continue to grow and strengthen my skills. Because my personal philosophy of learning includes continuous learning, I have created three goals: complete the ACE master’s program with fidelity, complete a meaningful and effective internship program where I am able to learn and develop the skills necessary to become a leader, and experience new opportunities where I am given the chance to lead and develop research based programs that will enhance learning within schools.
